Harvey Handler Bail Bonds LLC is a bail bond company with an office in Newark, Ohio, writing surety bonds for people booked into the county jail on East Main Street and charged in Licking County courts. The company began writing Ohio bail bonds in 1960. This page explains who we are, how we are licensed and how we work with the families who call us. To see where we are, visit our home page or the Newark office page.
Who writes your bond
Every bond we post is signed by an agent licensed by the Ohio Department of Insurance as a surety bail bond agent, and backed by an insurance company that guarantees the bond to the court.
Your paperwork names the agent who writes the bond and the surety company behind it, and you are welcome to ask for both before you sign.
You can check any Ohio bail agent's license through the Ohio Department of Insurance. We encourage families to do that before signing with anyone.
Why Newark
Licking County keeps its jail, its Municipal Court and its Court of Common Pleas in downtown Newark. Our office at 58 S 2nd St is in the same part of town, so a family who wants to sit down and go through the paperwork face to face can do that without a long drive. Many people never come in at all, and handle the forms by phone and email instead. Either way, the bond is filed for the same Licking County case.
How we work with families
Most people who call us have never dealt with a bail bond before, and they are often calling late, worried and short on information. A few habits shape how we handle that:
- We check the official record first. Before we talk about money, we look up the person on the sheriff's Active Inmate Listing with you and read the charge, bond amount and bond type together.
- Our price is on file with the state. Under R.C. 3905.93, what a bail agent charges has to match the agency's approved filing, and expense fees have to be disclosed. You see the premium and any fee in writing before anyone signs.
- We explain what the signer is promising. The person who signs as indemnitor takes on real obligations if the defendant misses court. The indemnitor guide lays out those duties, and we go over them again on the phone.
- We stay on the bond until the court lets it go. Court dates move, and a bond stays open through all of them until the case ends and the court releases it. If you have a question about a date or a condition along the way, call us.
What we do not do
We do not give legal advice or recommend a lawyer for a fee, and we cannot tell you how a judge will rule. We do not promise how fast someone will be released, because the jail controls its own release steps. We do not offer discounts on the premium, because Ohio law bars rebating it.
